It seems like every day I get a notice from some company or institution telling me they have been hacked – and that my data MAY have been compromised.
You have no doubt received countless missives about what businesses can do to prevent cybercrime. But at the end of the day, vulnerabilities are constantly being discovered. That said, while a 100% hack-proof cybersecurity system is a myth, you can drastically reduce your risk by being proactive.
Here are two extremely strong security measures that are absolute MUSTS for protecting your business:
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Your First Line of Defense
Multi-Factor Authentication requires multiple forms of verification, typically a code sent to your phone, before granting access. Yes, it adds a step, but it’s the closest thing to an “un-hackable” measure we have. (Hackers would need physical access to your phone – a far greater challenge than stealing a password.) Implement MFA on every app, software, and system you use. Do it now; thank me later.
- Password Manager: The Ultimate Password Protection
After MFA, a password manager is your strongest weapon. It generates unique, complex passwords for every site and application; so, if one site is compromised, the rest remain secure. Plus, you only have to remember one master password – it remembers the rest! You will need to use your password generator to update every site/login (I use LastPass but they are all about the same), and there is a fee. But the investment is minimal compared to the potential cost of a data breach.
Beyond the Basics
These two steps are essential, but don’t stop there. Consider these additional measures:<
- Professional IT Support: A qualified IT team can conduct a security audit and implement robust security protocols.
- Employee Training: A significant percentage of data breaches are caused by employee mistakes or negligence. Implement a comprehensive cybersecurity training program to educate your team about potential threats and safe online practices.
Don’t wait for a data breach! Take these simple steps to better protect your business, your data, and your reputation.
